Canoe carver murdered in Prampram

The Tema Regional Police Command has nabbed a 51-year-old farmer for the murder of a 38-year-old canoe carver.

The incident took place at Prampram, on Monday, June 8, 2015 between the hours of 8.00pm and 9.00pm.

Investigations revealed that, the suspect whose name is Tetteh Martey returned home to meet deceased, whose name was given as Lartey Ayim, 38 years and two of his friends, David Kojo, a 32-year-old Tailor and James Kponortey, aged 28 years and also a canoe carver, eating in front of the door to his room.

Accused took offence to that and confronted them.

The confrontation resulted in verbal exchange between the accused, the  deceased and his friends.

In the cause of the arguments, Martey entered his room and brought out a hammer but was disarmed by Lartey and his friends.

The accused who is a hunter went into his room again and this time returned with his double barrel short gun and shot twice at deceased and his friends.

Lartey and his friends sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds but deceased Lartey Ayim was hit in the knee by the bullets from the gun and fell instantly.

The Police upon rushing to the scene met deceased lying in a pool of blood, dead.

The two other victims were immediately rushed to the Prampram Polyclinic for treatment but were referred to the Tema General Hospital where David Kojo was treated and discharged.

The third victim, James Kponortey however was admitted at the hospital and is currently responding to treatment.

The body of deceased was deposited at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for preservation and autopsy and was later released to the bereaved family for burial.

Tetteh Martey has been arraigned before court and has been remanded into police custody as investigations continues.

In another development, on Friday, June 26, 2015, Police discovered a hideout for some criminals at a place called “Peace Be”, a suburb of New Dawhenya

Police went to the scene and recovered sacks and bags containing Two (2) Pump Action Guns, One (1) Locally Manufactured Short Gun, Two (2) Cutters, a Mall Hammer, a Screw Driver, Thirty-One (31) BB Cartridges, Three (3) Black Masks and Three (3) Black Shirts.

Police intelligence revealed that the above items were found by someone who attended nature’s call in the bush, around 5.30pm on the said date, under a Nim Tree concealed in the sack.

He informed police, who led by the Prampram District commander, DSP Bampoh, mounted a search for the suspects through intensive patrolling but no arrests were made.

The items have been retained as exhibits and residents in the area have been cautioned.

They have been given ippolice emergency numbers, to immediately report any suspicious characters to the police whiles investigation continues.
