Anti Corruption campaigners, SEND-Ghana has received funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement a four year project targeted at combating corruption in Ghana.

The project is dubbed, “Accountable Democratic Institutions and Systems Strengthening Project (ADISS).

SEND-Ghana is spearheading it in collaboration with the Ghana Anti Corruption Coalition (GACC) and the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII).

At a stakeholder zonal inception meeting in Tamale, SEND-Ghana’s Director of Advocacy, Clara Osei-Boateng said the ultimate goal of the project is to reduce corruption in Ghana.

She anticipated that the project could strengthen state institutions to deliver on their mandate.

According to her, the consortium of Civil Society Organizations will continue to hold duty bearers accountable for their stewardship.

She charged authorities to stop exerting influence on state institutions mandated to combat corruption.

Clara Osei-Boateng called for the fullest application of the Whistle Blowers Act.

Chief Inspector Alfred Agona Rashid of the Tamale Metro Police Command complained about political interference in their operations.

He said the fight against corruption will be an exercise in futility if the police and other law enforcement agencies do not independently carryout their core duties.

Chief Inspector Rashid thereby implored politicians to collaborate with the police to apprehend and prosecute lawbreakers.

At the zonal meeting, resource persons from the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) made presentations on their legislative and institutional efforts in fighting corruption.

The participants comprising institutional heads, the media, educationists, the police and civil society organizations were drawn from the three regions of the north.
