Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh has added the title ‘Babili Mansa’ to his name.
Babili Mansa in the Mandika-language means the “chief bridge builder” or “conqueror of rivers”.
The announcement which was made through a statement from the Gambia’s Presidency said President Jammeh should now be called “His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh Babili Mansa”.
President Jammeh seized power 21 years ago through a coup and has over the years been criticized for his leadership style.
In November 2014, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) bestowed the title “West Africa King of Impunity” on him for his 20-year-long rule of fear.
According to MFWA, Mr Jammeh’s rule has been “characterized by gross human rights violations, disregard for the rule of law and on-going impunity for egregious rights violations in The Gambia.”
