The Health Ministry has expressed uncertainty about meeting the June 30 deadline to complete negotiations on conditions of service for public sector doctors.
[contextly_sidebar id=”OAnEj56WFB8nA2wsv8eGpeNnC4Tuqu4y”]The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Tony Goodman said work is earnestly ongoing to ensure the document is ready but he is unable to determine if the document will be ready before the doctors embark on their planned strike in July.
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) gave the ultimatum last year and has since been giving regular warnings to the government.
Their final warning was issued on Tuesday June 16, noting that they have given government eight months to meet their demands.
In an interview with Citi News, Tony Goodman explained that the Ministry has done its part by sending the document to the appropriate institutions – the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Attorney General and the Public Service Commission.
“It will be difficult for me to say either today or tomorrow. If we give timelines and we are not able to meet the timelines, then what happens?” he asked.
According to him these institutions have promised to “complete their portion and submit their comment soon.”
“Immediately the Ministry receives that, we will start calling the various health professionals to come for negotiations,” he assured.
Mr Goodman revealed that the leadership of the GMA recently submitted the association’s comments on the document “and over the weekend, it was worked on so very soon, that document will be ready for negotiations.”
