The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has installed Closed Circuit Television cameras at vantage points on campus to monitor and check criminal activities as part of measures to ensure maximum security.
Professor Domwini D. Kuupole, Vice Chancellor who made this known at the weekend said security on campus is relatively safe for academic work, but the open-door nature of the academic facility leads to security breaches.
“There have been instances where people’s mobile phones, laptops and handbags have been snatched from them by criminal elements who mingle with students,” he stated.
Prof Kuupole was speaking at a matriculation ceremony to formally admit a total of 5,354 fresh students to pursue various undergraduate and post-graduate Sandwich Programmes for the 2015/2016 academic year in Cape Coast.
In addition, the campus security and the police would continue to conduct patrols to ward off any person with bad intentions, the Vice Chancellor said.
He advised students to observe personal safety precautions.
“Be extra careful and alert to these miscreants who may willingly offer their unsolicited services”, he said.
The matriculants comprised 2,881 post graduate students and 2,473 undergraduate students who would pursue programmes at the College of Education Studies, College of Human and Legal Studies, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and Colleges of Health and Allied Sciences.
Of the number, 2,908 representing 54.3 per cent are males as against 2,446 females representing 45.7 per cent.
Prof Kuupole said the university is committed to its core values and advised the students to strictly adhere to rules and regulations in the students’ Handbook, and pay attention to academic work.
