Deputy Minority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Dominic Nitiwul is asking for a critical review of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constitution to protect its experienced Members of Parliament (MPs).
The Bimbilla MP said the high number of legislators who lost in the party’s primaries is indicative that “the NPP would have to look again at the way we look we go about our primaries – the method, the timing.”
[contextly_sidebar id=”eiVdNIO0jZKoLN5MFfvBEHuzffRg2qAJ”]“We still have to do some in house searching to see whether what we are doing is the right thing because it’s not easy to lose that rich caliber of people in Parliament,” he remarked.
The NPP over the weekend elected Parliamentary candidates who will contest in the 2016 general elections.
Majority of the incumbent MPs sought to be re-elected but 24 of them failed to secure the mandate of their constituents.
Mr. Nitiwul said he foresees a hard time for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if the new Parliament is inaugurated in 2017 since most of its experienced hands lost in last Saturday’s primaries.
Heavy weights like Dr. Richard Anane, Francis Addae Nimoh, Isaac Osei, Dr. Afriyie Owusu Akoto and other 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) lost their bid to contest the 2016 Parliamentary elections on the ticket of the NPP.
Speaking to Citi News, Dominic Nitiwul who was retained as NPP Parliamentary candidate for Bimbilla said in as much the newly elected candidates will come with fresh ideas, the departure of the old MPs will be felt by the Minority.
“Those who are coming are experienced in their own right but I am talking about Parliamentary experience in the sense that some of the people who lost are very rich in Parliamentary experience. They are not coming back to Parliament but most of them are very well versed in Parliamentary work,” he remarked.
Mr. Nitiwul acknowledged that if the elected candidates are able to win the 2016 elections, they will learn how Ghana’s Legislature operates, but he pointed out that “it will take a bit of time. Some are fast learners, some may be slow learners but it will take some bit of time.”
He nonetheless promised that when the NPP wins power to 2016, those who lost will serve in government to help develop the nation.
“I know what when we are in government which we will be, the party will use some of them to ensure that we give Ghana a good system of governance.”
