The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection will begin an emergency LEAP intervention programme for person’s affected by the fire and flood disaster that occurred about a week ago.
The sector Minister Nana Oye Lithur made this announcement when she toured some areas in Accra that were affected by the disaster.
Affected residents in all five affected regions will be registered and given “100 Ghana cedis per household for the next three months,” Nana Oye said.
The five affected regions are Greater Accra Region where 30,688 persons were affected, Volta Region had 1995 affected persons, Ashanti Region recorded 1486 flood victims, Western Region also recorded 1560 victims and Central Region where 1893 residents were affected.
Nana Oye Lithur explained that the programme which begins immediately with the selection of beneficiaries will target three main categories of victims.
These are “household who lost their businesses in the floods and fire, households who lost personal effects in their homes and households who lost a bread winner.”
The Ministry will also distribute 1000 matresses, 1000 blankets and 1000 bags of 25kg rice to the victims.
The minister believed that these items can bring relief to the victims as “we work on a long term solution to the crisis.”
Nana Oye finally added that when the three months of the emergency LEAP intervention is over “beneficiaries who would be found qualified would be enrolled onto mainstream LEAP programme.”
