A man has had an incredible 420 kidney stones removed from his kidney by doctors after attending a hospital doubled up in pain.

Surgeons have blamed He Dong’s poor health on his high protein tofu diet.

The 55 year old had surgery on his left kidney which lasted two hours at the Dongyang People’s Hospital in Jinhua city of East China’s Zhejiang province.

A CT scan for abdominal pain revealed his kidney was filled with 420 stones.

He told doctors he ate a large daily diet of gypsum tofu, a local food with a high concentration of calcium sulfate.

Dr Wei Yubin explained: “Soy products, especially gypsum tofu, are very high in calcium, the excess of which cannot be excreted from body without a sufficient intake of water.”

Medical records showed that some of the stones had been diagnosed several years ago but he had chosen to do nothing about the condition.

The Shanghaiist reports that the patient had 10 stones removed 20 years ago using lithotripsy, a medical procedure that destroys kidney stones.

But this time, the doctors removed the 420 stones one at a time with forceps.

“The operation almost took two hours. We spent 45 minutes just taking out the tiny stones. After the operation, my hands and legs were both numb.”

Manual worker He, 55, who is from Jinhua city says he doesn’t like drinking water, but has been ordered to change his eating habits.

He has been told to cut down the amount of tofu he consumes every day, and has kept the stones as a souvenir.
