Coca Cola empowers women in Tema

The Coca Cola Bottling Company has organized a one-day economic empowerment seminar for some women in the Tema Metropolis.

Participants were given tips on how to take hold of their economic lives and were also taken through the basic requirements for setting up a retail business.

About 50 women who took part in the seminar were also encouraged to explore their business potentials.

The seminar forms part of a global vision by the Coca Cola Bottling Company dubbed 5by20.

5by20 is an ambitious programme initiated by the Coca Cola Bottling Company to empower economically five million women by the year 2020.

Speaking to media men after the seminar, Public Affairs and Communication Director of the Coca Cola Bottling Company, Isaac Augustus Antwi said apart from organizing such training programmes, the company in 2014 gave start up kits to over 3,000 women in the three regions of the north.

He said the company hopes to empower about 5,000 women in Ghana alone by the end of 2015.

“This is a kind of corporate social responsibility we are undertaking with the hope of imparting entrepreneurial knowledge to women.”

Isaac Antwi noted that “the programme started about four years ago and it was a global commitment from Coca Cola that between now and the year 2020, five million women would have been empowered economically.”

“In the North also our targets were women in business already and women who are school dropouts. With the school dropouts, we were able to set them up into retail business in our product line. So they were given a table with an umbrella on top, and then we gave them ice chest with some products. So the products served as the seed money,” he added.
