About 5,000 people have been displaced in Tema as a result of torrential rains on Wednesday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LjBArf0uhNpEeavRnUwy2T480Sn7ic3w”]This was made known when the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Isaac Ashai Odamte toured some of the worst affected areas on Thursday.

Citi News Tema Correspondent Elvis Washington reported that most of the affected areas include parts of Adjei Kojo, Lashibi, Community 20 and the Church village at Tema Community five.

“Flood victims had no choice but to seek shelter in church buildings in the area,” he added.

Some of the victims who spoke to Citi News said: “our money, our clothes and our slippers all got lost. So we have no place to sleep. We are sleeping in the church now.”

Another resident bemoaned, “We are many…we have got nothing. All our things have gone, we need help.”

According to the Tema MCE, Isaac Ashai Odamte efforts are underway to ensure that the affected persons are given shelter and some assistance from NADMO.

He added that drastic measures will be taken to forestall such occurrences in the future.

“We have to take care of the people who need places to sleep and not to say that because it is a low-lying area and already, NADMO has registered almost all the pockets of the people,” he added, “I have appealed to the churches to open their doors for people to have shelter.”

Several lives and properties were lost to the flood that engulfed the parts of the country last Wednesday.
