Some New Patriotic Party Executives in the Volta Region are unhappy about the calls for the National Chairman of the party, Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong to be removed from office.
The Volta Regional Secretary, Joseph Homenya, had earlier denied reports that party executives in the region endorsed a plan to remove the party’s General Secretary and National Chairman.
[contextly_sidebar id=”CR9yVGxGmy0GaRpGvEW4q7R3BR5eeEgd”]He clarified that the executives only asked the two to voluntarily step aside until investigations into the death of the Upper East Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama ends.
However, at addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the deputy Volta Regional Organizer Evans Ayovor, described the moves in the region and in other regions across the country to remove Afoko and Agyepong from office as unconstitutional.
“Unilateral actions frequently embarked on by one regional chairman is calculated to fragment the party in the Volta Region. Removal of the National Executives of the regional Chairman, Mr. Peter Amewu, and others,” he said.
According to Ayovor, reports that the region had passed a vote of no confidence on Afoko and Agyepong were false adding that the divisions within the party were affecting the party’s preparations ahead of the general elections in 2016.
“We collectively wish to debunk this assertion as vicious and designed to commit administrative fraud thus deepening internal divisions within the NPP at a time when rank and file need peace and unity to win election 2016 with single purposefulness and collective interest,” Ayovor stated.
“At no point in time during our deliberations at regional meeting where an issue of no vote of no confidence was tabled or was there and instance where the National Chairman and the General Secretary were impugned with criminality or abetment of crime with regards to the tragic demise of our colleague, the late Regional Chairman of the Upper East Region.” he added.
Crisis point in the NPP?
Calls for the exit of the National Chairman an General Secretary have intensified in recent times following their alleged involvement in circumstances leading to the demise of Adam Mahama who died from extensive acid burns.
The two were due to meet some regional executives but the meeting was disrupted by some youth who were reported to be acting on the orders of Adam Mahama.
Their term in office has been fraught with several controversies, culminating in the death of the Chairman.
There have also been reports of of a strained relationship between the pair and the Presidential Candidate of the party, Nana Akufo Addo.
‘I have not resigned’
Several media organisations on Tuesday reported that Kwabena Agyepong had resigned from his position as General Secretary after a letter signed in his name and bearing the letterhead of the NPP was circulated to the media.
However, Mr Agyepong, rejected the claims, insisting that he intended to see out his mandate in office.
‘Step aside’ for the good of the NPP
Citi News sources within the NPP indicate that the Council of Elders of the party had written to Afoko and Agyepong to step aside to ensure that peace prevails.
However, the Council declined to comment on whether such a letter had been issued.
