New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong have been asked by the party’s Council of Elders to step down from their respective positions.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9pjdO1S70ZAJBGmyIAsLez85YDlXD455″]The Council of Elders made the call in a letter addressed to the two national executives.

Citi News sources within the party indicated that they condemned the current wranglings in the party and called for calm.

Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong have been under intense pressure to resign following the death of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama.

Meanwhile, in an interview on Eyewitness News, Mr Agyepong stated emphatically that he will not resign.

“I intend to see out my term of office by God’s grace.”

Death of Adam Mahama

Adam Mahama died after he suffered acid attack last week.

The two reportedly held a meeting with some party executives in the  Upper East region without informing the regional chairman, Adam Mahama.

The meeting was subsequently disrupted by some NPP youth in the area while the regional organizer was reportedly physically assaulted in the process.

Weeks after the incident, some two persons attacked the Upper East Chairman with acid leading to his untimely death.

A Bbrother of Paul Afoko was subsequently arrested, brought to Accra and charged with murder.

The other accomplice is currently at large.

Eight regions want Afoko, Agyepong ousted

So far, eight regions in the country have petitioned the party’s National Council asking Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong to step aside to pave way for further investigations into the death of Adam Mahama.

The regions are: Eastern, Central, Western, Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Volta and Greater Accra.

Some members of the NPP have argued that ever since the two were elected into office, the party has been plagued by a number of controversies which have created divisions in the party.
