The Interior Ministry has stated that security in the Upper East Region will not be compromised.
Security in the region was tightened after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama was killed after some unknown persons poured acid on him on Thursday.
[contextly_sidebar id=”8teK5CiKntQMJCvcO56wbUtWXuAQabSG”]Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy Interior Minister, James Agalga said his outfit is monitoring the area closely to ensure that nothing untoward happens.
“The Ministry is responsible for the maintenance of internal security and so whatever is happening in the NPP has the potential to undermine our collective security so the Ministry is definitely watching very closely to ensure that nothing untoward happens.”
Mr. Agalga also commended the Police in the area for their swift intervention after the incident occurred.
“When the unfortunate incident in Bolga happened which resulted in the loss of a life of NPP Regional Chairman, the Police made a swift intervention. I want to use this opportunity to congratulate the Police for the good work they are doing in Bolga to ensure that peace returns in the area following the death of the NPP Chairman.”
We’ll treat incident as purely criminal – Northern Regional Command
Meanwhile the Northern Regional Command has indicated that it will treat a shooting incident on a group of NPP supporters as purely criminal.
“I cannot confirm whether this thing is linked to any political party. It is purely criminal matter and that is how we are handling it. We don’t want to be joined in any argument as to whether it is linked to NPP or not. We are not treating it as a political matter but we are treating it as a criminal matter,” the Public Relations Officer for the Police in the Northern Region, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh told Citi News.
There was another attack on NPP supporters on Monday evening.
Two armed men on motorbikes fired shots close to the venue where a group purported to be NPP supporters were meeting.
The incident was immediately brought under control by the Police.
ASP Tetteh said investigations into the case have began.
“We have received complaints. Unfortunately none of the people who came to the lodge the complaints have come to give us any undertaking. We are in touch with them to invite them to give us more information because they must be able to tell us if they can identify the culprits so that we can get them arrested,” he explained.
