Nominations for the maiden Golden Movie Awards (GMA) which seeks to honour individuals in the African movie industry was announced at the Oak Plaza Hotel in Accra last Thursday.

The awards also aim at setting a standard of excellence for the African movie industry and to get international acclaim for the productions.

Some of the Ghanaian actors who made it on the list are Majid Michel, John Dumelo, Kojo Nkansah (Lil Win) and Elikem the Tailor. They are all vying for the Best Actor award.

In all,  awards will be given in 38 categories which include Golden Supporting Actor, Golden Supporting Actress, Golden Actor In A Drama, Golden Actor In A Comedy, Golden Actress In Drama, Golden Actress In Comedy, Golden Actor In  A TV Series, Golden Actress In A TV Series, Golden Movie Drama, Golden Movie Comedy, Golden Writer Drama (TV/Movie), and Golden Writer Comedy (TV/Movie).

At a press conference to announce the nominations list last Thursday night, Ms. Mimi Andani, the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of  NMJ Ghana, organisers of the awards scheme, said it was about time Ghana held such an awards scheme to “ highlight our movies and market the actors on international platforms.

“The special thing about this awards scheme is that the jury will look at the acting expertise of the nominees and not necessarily their popularity,” she stated.

Although the venue and date for the awards were not disclosed, Ms Andani said it was a difficult task for the jury to select the final nominations list out of the over 1000 entries that were submitted.

The night brought together a number of celebs, which include Kafui Danku, Irene Logan, D.Cryme, Ama K. Abebrese, Nana Ama McBrown, Elikem, Paulina Oduro and Eazzy.

Veteran actress Grace Omaboe aka Maame Dokonu, who was present at the function, lauded the initiative of the organisers.

She, however, advised movie producers and directors to cast older actors so that the younger ones could learn from them.

Patrons were also treated to music performances by Ofie Kodjoe,  Adoma and Irene Logan.
