The family of Paul Afoko, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appealed to party members not to sow seeds of division between them and the family of the late Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama.

A statement from the family said it is unfortunate that Paul Afoko’s younger brother, Gregory Afoko, has been dragged into the murder case of the Mahama Adam.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hFvxpv7giRWR9qpvVA1eXJSuDSM7Naul”]Acid was poured on Mahama Adam on Wednesday by some two assailants; an incident which caused his death on Thursday.

Gregory Afoko was reportedly picked up by the Police after it was alleged that Mahama Adam mentioned him as being one the culprits responsible for the attack.

Although the Police are yet to confirm he is the suspect in their custody for security reasons, the statement from the Afoko family which was signed by Gregory’s Counsel, Amoak Afoko, has given credence to the reports.

Already, tensions are simmering within the NPP and some aggrieved youth have threatened mayhem if Paul Afoko makes an appearance at the funeral on Saturday.

But the Afoko family has defended Gregory Afoko, insisting that he was at home when the incident occurred.

The statement explained that “Gregory, on the night Adams was attacked, was at home and nowhere near the crime scene. He had been asleep when the unfortunate incident happened. Indeed, the police officers who were at the family house to arrest him touched the engine of his motor bike and noticed that it was cold indicating that it had not been running.”

“We, however, consider it unfortunate that a beloved son of the Afoko family, Gregory Afoko, has been dragged into the matter.”

The family however expressed the hope that the Police investigations will unravel the true culprit(s) who committed the crime.

The Afoko family advised that “this is a time for sober reflection and prayer for the soul of our departed brother. We mourn with the bereaved family and express deep condolences.”

“We advise those stoking fires of rancour and violence to respect our wishes and not sow seeds of division between the two families.”
