The host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom Otchere has attributed the seeming internal wrangling and tensions within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to factionalism in the party.

“It is unfortunate and no one could imagine the kind of outcomes that we are seeing but it also appears to be the age old factions that have operated within the tradition for a very long time, crossing almost half a century…,” said Adom Otchere.

[contextly_sidebar id=”T9x4OIu9Mnm45PSFG4YlteZVDwWQxKGa”]He was commenting on reactions within the NPP after the death of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama who died on Thursday after suffering an acid attack.

Adom Otchere who has been covering events relating to the NPP since its first congress was convinced inherent  divisions within the party, which he believes are based on “personality” more than on “philosophy and ideology” might have influenced some of the reactions of party members after the  death of Mahama.

“We have those kind of factions and ideological and philosophical divisions but the NPP is one of those parties whose factions and divisions are based on personality really more than ideology or philosophy and that has played out in the party’s politics for a very long time.

“It has played out  in a way in which one group is thought to be those who  are coastal areas and eastern areas and a bit of the Northerners who form the intellectual belt of the party. They form those who develop the party, the rules of engagement and then we have the big Ashanti group who will be those who finance the party,” he explained.

Paul Adom Otchere is not the only person who attributed the recent incident to seeming factions within the party.

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South did same, asking the leadership of the NPP to quell tensions within.

“I do not understand why a general secretary or a chairman of the party should have a tiff with another serious member of the party. Is it a personal undertaking or we are looking at the bigger picture,”  Atta Akyea stated.
