Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko has urged Ghanaians to stop making wild and unfounded accusations in trying to  determine the person who murdered the party’s Upper East regional chairman, Adam Mahama.

[contextly_sidebar id=”38mRIuR1nbvJvvGHxNvg9X9GYfyTirFl”]Mr. Afoko posted on his facebook wall that he had a good relationship with Adam Mahama and that the issues surrounding the disruption of a meeting in the region a week ago had been resolved between the two.

Following the death of Adam Mahama, which happened on Thursday, some party supporters have accused brother of NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko of masterminding the attack.

Where as some have called that Paul Afoko and General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong should resign over the issue, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Kennedy Agyapong  said they must be prosecuted.

“It is a very big blow to both his family and the party. Irrespective of whatever differences some may have had with him, Adams was a stalwart in the party in the region. Indeed, these are sad moments for us all,” he added.

Paul Afoko further called for calm in the party and urged the Police to speed up their investigations.

“The barbaric manner in which Adam Mahama, was attacked, resulting in his death is abhorrent; I absolutely condemn it and whole-heartedly endorse Police investigations into the matter.”

Below is the full statement:

I am saddened by the death of the Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama this morning. Such a loss, at a time when the party was building bridges of unity is disheartening.

It is a very big blow to both his family and the party. Irrespective of whatever differences some may have had with him, Adams was a stalwart in the party in the region.

Indeed, these are sad moments for us all.

Given events that led to the loss, it is natural to expect the various twists that have been put to it but I want to urge all to remain calm and avoid wild and unfounded accusations.

I had opportunity to interact with Adams following the disruption of the meeting with constituency executives on Thursday, May 14, 2015.

He expressed remorse and offered a reconciliatory gesture. I accepted this gesture with sincerity and urged all party executives in the region to work together in harmony.

I have championed a cause of unity in the party; consistently, I have urged party faithful to avoid divisions. Discernibly who stands to gain from such divisions, tragedies and tensions?

The barbaric manner in which Adams Mahama, was attacked, resulting in his death is abhorrent; I absolutely condemn it and whole-heartedly endorse Police investigations into the matter.

Whoever was responsible must be made to face the full rigours of the law.

I, hereby, express deep and sincere condolences to the family of Adams Mahama and urge all party members to remain calm as the police gets to the bottom of the matter. May Adams Mahama’s soul rest in Peace!
