The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has  charged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to urgently address the violence which has plagued the party in recent times.

[contextly_sidebar id=”AirqMilmAa8COGenSNzyCQU4pBUxCa5v”]In a statement, the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said: “We also call on the leadership of the New Patriotic Party to take urgent steps to quell the growing level of violence and lawlessness that has characterized the activities of the party which has no doubt resulted in this needless loss of life.”

The Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama died at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital on Thursday after some assailants poured acid on him on Wednesday.

The leadership of the NPP has called for calm with the party and has urged members to allow the security agencies to investigate the matter.

Asiedu Nketia in the statement decribed shock at the incident saying, “we condemn it in the strongest possible terms this barbaric and cowardly murder which represents a major setback for our democracy.”

The NDC urged the Ghana Police Service to intensify investigations to bring the criminals behind the attack to book, adding that, the matter should not be treated as an “internal party matter but a matter that has serious national security implications.”

“These acts of violence and lawlessness are casting an undeserved slur on our reputation as a peaceful and democratic country.”

Asiedu Nketia also extended the party’s heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the NPP and called on all political pundits to exercise “the greatest level of circumspection in discussing this matter in view of the sentivities involved.”
