Actress and lead organiser of the popular #dumsorvigil, Yvonne Nelson has said it is a “humbling experience” for people to compare her to the great warrior Yaa Asantewaa who led the Ashanti rebellion against British colonial rule.

After managing to pull thousands of Ghanaians out of their homes to join her to protest against the crippling power crisis, many Ghanaians have likened her heroics to the Ejisu queen.

“Yaa Asantewaa is a huge name and it’s really humbling that anyone would call me Yaa Asantewaa. As a matter of fact, I love it. Let me put it in there Yvonne Yaa Asantewaa Nelson so that’s like my new name right now,” Yvonne said.

The actress was vilified by some government appointees when she officially announced her intensions to organise the vigil.

“We all need to sit down and plan the next campaign that we want to do. We just want to be the voice, we just want to speak up for the people so anything that would help Ghana, help the nation, help the people, we are there to support,” she added.

She was joined by Prince David Osei, Efya, Barimah Sydney and others on a vigil dubbed #dumsormuststop.

‘Dumsor vigil’ was very successful – Police

The Accra Regional Police Command earlier commended the celebrities who organized the ‘ vigil’ for adhering to the rules and guidelines given ahead of the event.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Effia Tenge said despite the controversy which preceded the vigil, the event was “peaceful and successful.”

“The Police can say that it was a peaceful event… I can confirm that the vigil was successful and it ended incident free and very peaceful,” she said.
