A Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Matthew Opoku Prempeh has described the on-going voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission’s (EC) as illegal.
The Commission last Friday announced the opening of the register for Ghanaians who have turned 18 and those who could not register in the last exercise.
[contextly_sidebar id=”7PdSSMAmkonwgLSinJnQ6AWhoXzTlk0e”]The Manhyia South legislator however posits that rules guiding the ongoing exercise do not conform with the provisions of the 1992 constitution.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, the MP said the manner in which the EC is conducting the exercise contradicts over 10 provisions of Constitutional Instrument(CI) 72.
According to him, though some sections of the CI mandates the EC to select a registration centre that is easily accessible to the populace, it has failed to implement that directive.
“Section (22b)talks about the place[registration centre] being accessible to the populace but when you look at what they are doing, people will have to travel for over 60 kilometres before registering and that contradicts the law.”
He further argued that the EC had also breached the constitution by choosing registration centres that do not fall within a polling district and also failing to inform various political parties that the exercise had began.
Matthew Opoku’s views on the ongoing exercise come days after the General Secretary of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwabena Agyepong, called for the suspension of the exercise until the necessary consultations are made.
