Millet porridge often referred to as “Hausa Koko,” a local variety patronised by many Ghanaians is gradually losing its appeal amongst many residents in the Sekondi Takoradi metropolis.

[contextly_sidebar id=”A7c0tJ8sCMz5FN1h8xc2d1xo0eGsRE88″]The porridge business is no longer lucrative as the persistent power outages does not allow producers of the product to serve the porridge to customers in its preferred fresh state.

Unlike previously when producers of the porridge had access to constant electricity supply and could, therefore, mill the products on a daily basis, now they have no option than to mill large quantities, using only a portion and preserving the rest.

The preservation of the milled millet is the problem as it leads to fermentation and a subsequent change of taste.

Some sellers of the porridge told the GNA that the fermentation of the milled millet had led to some sellers adding more sugar to cover the fermentation.

Aunt Amariya, a koko seller around the CRC Church in Takoradi, said her sales had reduced drastically due to the power outages and
appealed to government to solve the crisis to save their business.
