Citi Sports can confirm the death of former Hearts of Oak, Olympics and Liberty Professionals coach “Sir” Cecil Jones Attuquayefio at the age of 70.

Attuquayefio came to prominence on the local scene after coach Ghana’s U-17 team to finish third at the 1999 U-17 World Cup.

The team had the likes of Michael Essien, Ishmael Addo and Bernard Don Bortey.

He coached Hearts of Oak to win the Ghanaian League from 1998 to 2000 and the CAF Champions League in 2000 and the CAF Super Cup in 2001.

He also managed the Black Stars to face Nigeria in the 2002 World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The team he presented that day was made up of players from the Hearts of Oak team.

He moved on to manage Liberty Professionals in 2002 and the Beninese national team in 2004.

Up until his passing, he worked with Liberty Professionals as a technical director.
