More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from the north-east Philippines as the country awaits the arrival of Typhoon Noul.

The typhoon is expected to reach the main island of Luzon by Sunday evening local time.

Flights and sea crossings have been cancelled and relief supplies moved in.

The Philippines sees frequent extreme weather, with more than 7,000 people killed when Typhoon Haiyan struck in 2013.

Typhoon Noul is forecast to clip the northern Cagayan province before moving into the sea towards Japan.

Officials fear landslides, flash floods and storm surges and said they were prepared to move more people away from low-lying ground.

The central province of Aurora is also on alert ahead of the typhoon, but that was not enough to deter surfers from taking advantage of high waves.
