The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called off a planned demonstration to protest the introduction of a new government policy that will see students in the country’s tertiary institutions pay utility bills.
The suspension of the demonstration comes days after government announced that Cabinet was yet decide on the policy.
[contextly_sidebar id=”kPTnvRwHPkHFbfbAPqpeOrpGpKhfdbyt”]The Deputy Minister of Education, Okudzeto Ablakwa earlier called for calm at the various tertiary institutions, saying government is yet to take a decision on the matter based on the UPSA declaration.
Speaking to Citi News, the General Secretary of NUGS, Iddi Muhayu-Deen however said they had rescinded their decision and will wait on government to take measures to address the issue.
“Eventually government is clearing the air, allaying our fears that there is any such policy in place,” Muhayu-Deen said.
Meanwhile NUGS and other institutions have declared its intention to vehemently resist the introduction of the policy which they say will increase tuition fees.
The Students Representative Council(SRC) of the Takoradi Polytechnic earlier stated that it is unfair for government to renege its core functions to students when they are not financially strong to bear the cost.
They say they are surprised by government’s move when it had assured them last semester of not paying utility bills.
