About 1,200 residents of the Nasia community in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region have been displaced by a severe rainstorm.
Seventy eight houses comprising 319 rooms were completely ripped off and the displaced persons are now living with family relations.
The District National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed the statistics to Citi News.
The displaced people include 482 students of the St. Pauls Senior High school whose dormitory block was completely ripped off.
The school management has created makeshift structures to accommodate the students outside the community.
The Nasia District Assembly primary school block which was funded by the Millennium Challenge Account and furnished with computers, a television and other learning materials was also ripped off.
The Head teacher, Yamusah Tahiru appealed to the Member of Parliament for Walewale constituency, the District assembly and NADMO to rapidly re-roof the school block.
He said any delay in re-roofing it could affect school reopening scheduled for May 12, 2015.
He also complained about overcrowding in the classrooms for which reason government should expand infrastructure there.
A middle age man called Shiraz Bawumia who was hit by some ripped off materials was admitted at the Walewale District Hospital,
The victims who are counting their losses are appealing to government and other philanthropists for assistance.
The Walewale Member of Parliament, Dr. Sugri Bambangi who rushed to the scene upon distressed call advised residents of the area to cultivate the habit of planting trees.
This, according to him will serve as wind breaks to mitigate the impact of such future occurrences.
Dr. Sugri pledged his commitment to liaise with the District Assembly to re-roof the affected school buildings.
He further promised to mobilize relief items to complement NADMO’s assistance.
The Nasia chief, Mozurana-Dan N. Abdulai attributed the magnitude of the rainstorm to the indiscriminate cutting of trees by illegal chainsaw operators.
He thereby declared zero tolerance for such activities in the Nasia community.
