President John Mahama says Government is set to collaborate with the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences to take up proposals from the academy on how to solve the many problems the nation is facing.
This to him is to ensure that the various government agencies benefit from the knowledge available at the academy.
The president made these remarks at the meeting with a delegation from the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, led by its President, Professor Akilakga Sawyerr.
“We know that the academy does a lot work and in all the lectures, specialist come and speak about solutions but there appears to be a disconnect between the policy uptake between of the MDAs and the academy and I think that, that is what we need to work on together.”
“The last time I came to the academy I was surprised at the range of publications that covered a lot things that we are dealing with on a day to day basis. But I’m sure that the ministers and the chief directors in the sectors don’t know that these publications even exist to be able to read them and let them inform the policy implementation at the MDA level. So one of the things we can do working together this year is to see how we create that connection between government as the implementational body and your academy.”
In another development the President Mahama has bemoaned the nation’s inability to enforce its building codes and tasked the Ghana Institution of engineer’s to spearhead innovative means to deal with looming disasters.
He made this known during a courtesy call on him by the Ghana Institution of Engineers at the Flagstaff House.
“We all have been told that Ghana sits on a fort line and can experience an earth quake at any time and we therefore has set up certain building codes and standard but unfortunately enforcing them has become a major problem and that’s why we’ve had disasters like the Melcom disaster and there’ve been several more that have occurred. That’s because people are not abiding by the codes.”
