The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) elections expected to be held on Ho Polytechnic campus hangs in the balance as students accuse Polytechnic Management of attempts to subvert the union’s constitution.

[contextly_sidebar id=”K2ZZ1qMmsueiENT1gyINnIrbax4Mw08P”]The disgruntled student leaders said Ho polytechnic has resolved to pull out from hosting the election following a squabble between the polytechnic management and executives of GNUPS over the eligibility of one of the candidates in the race.

According to the coordinating secretary of GNUPS Amponsah Manu the dean of students in letter , dated April 29, 2015 demanded for the eviction of a successfully vetted aspirant (name withheld) on basis of poor academic records of 2.4 Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA).

A demand the coordinating secretary said contravenes the requirements stipulated by the union’s constitution and NABPTEX Regulations.

‘’The academic credentials of the candidate in question was perused and the committee found her to be in good academic standing as per the National standards of NABPTEX; that a student above CGPA OF 1.5 is considered academically fit to continue his/her program of study’’ he stated.

He accused the Dean of Students Ben Honyenuga of ostensibly infringing on the democratic rights of the students by imposing strange rules and regulations on them.

Meanwhile the Union’s Treasurer and past student of Ho Polytechnic, Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu has voiced concerns about what he described as an apparent increase in aggression and bitterness among students on campus and called for a swift intervention into the issue.

In accordance with the rotational policy, Ho Polytechnic is due to host the national secretariat of the association for the 2015/2016 academic. The current situation if not curtailed would deny the polytechnic of its right till the next decade.
