[Audio] Teary Halidu Haruna apologizes to Lydia Forson et al

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Halidu Haruna, has apologized for verbally assaulting the Ghanaian female celebrities who criticized the government’s handling of the power crisis.

Alhaji Haruna described the celebrities who criticized President John Mahama as unmarried prostitutes on his Facebook page.

He received heavy public backlash on social media which forced him to retract and apologize.

Speaking to Citi News, a teary Alhaji Haruna said he wishes he never uttered those words.

“I am dumbfounded as I speak to you now. I wish I could swallow back those words but unfortunately, those words are out there in the public domain. I want to once again retract and reemphasize the apology and say that I am sorry to those I many have disappointed by those words,” he said.

He indicated that although it is unfortunate that “I got myself into this, I am not part of those who create controversy and are happy about it.”

Asked why he apologized for his derogatory comments, Alhaji Haruna said: “When you put out something and one or two people disagree with you, it should actually dawn on you that something is wrong and that is what makes you a human being.”

He was hopeful that with time, “people will get to know that I don’t just come on air and say things just like that.”

Alhaji Haruna however dismissed suggestions his utterances will cost him the Ablekuma Central Constituency seat he is hoping to contest in the NDC’s parliamentary primaries.

According to him, getting the nod will be dependent on the kind of leadership the residents in the area are looking for.

“The question is, do we want dishonest people or we want honest people to own up and acknowledge that they are wrong and render and unqualified apology?” he asked.

He was of the view that if other politicians will emulate and own up to their mistakes, “I’m sure we will not be where we are today.”
