A former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Emmanuel Aseidu Mante has called on Rural and Community Banks in the country to appoint competent individuals with good management skills to their boards.

According to the former deputy governor most of such banks have collapsed due to the lack of trained, competent directors and managers.

His comments comes at a time when most rural and community banks in the country are said to be performing poorly.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Mr Mante said training of managers and appointing competent individuals to the boards of rural and community banks is a sure way of having a vibrant and thriving rural and community banking industry.

“The Rural banks that are having problems, is a simple question of mismanagement. When you don’t have a good board, a board that understands what banking is and also when you don’t have a manger who understands what banking is, then you going to run into problems all the time.”

“There are some rural banks that do not have good members of board who do not understand what the business of banking is and therefore decisions that they take goes against the bank, with some who also don’t have very good management. Therefore to tackle the problem with the rural and community banks in the country these are the two front that must be dealt with to strengthen the system,” he added.

The former deputy governor further called for the banks to train the managers and board members adding that “educating the directors on their roles and responsibilities must be done to help them know proper board room procedures.”
