A first intercultural Chinese Language Learning Centre for the West Africa sub region has been opened at the Ho Polytechnic.

The ultra modern language centre which forms part of the Ghana–China collaborations in areas of education would among other things encourage exchange of culture and improve bilateral relationship between the two nations.

The centre runs courses in Chinese language for students of the Ho Polytechnic and the general public at flexible hours.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, the Dean Of International Studies, Madam Esther Theresa Appaw Agbola said over hundred students have already benefited from free lessons piloted by the centre.

She said as part of plans, students who excel in the language study would be awarded scholarships to study in China.

“Students are going to benefit from a lot of top up programs in China especially those with HND certificates’’ she said.
One of the Chinese instructors at the Centre Neo Koe explained with examples some similarities of sounds in the Chinese language and the Ewe language of the people of the Volta region.

She charged residents to take advantage of the common homophones to acquaint themselves with the Chinese diction.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister Mr. Francis Gangyaglo who was also present at the ceremony said the establishment of the Centre was an eye-opener for the region.

He therefore affirmed government’s support to improve quality of education in the region.
