Government is alarmed by the ceaseless chieftaincy conflicts which have plagued the three regions of the north.
[contextly_sidebar id=”6aqc2yicyOmHqAjJwVRWFosE6rpndJj9″]These chieftaincy conflicts have always heightened tensions in hotspots including Dagbon, Bimbila, Bawku, WA and Bunkprugu/Yunyoo.
This is why government is calling for a succession plan for the chieftaincy institution in the three regions of the north.
Interior Minister, Mark Owen Woyongo made the call at the palace of overlord of the Mamprugu traditional area, the Nayiri.
“I want to appeal to the Nayiri and all other paramount chiefs in the three northern regions to come together and come out with a succession plan for all skins in the three northern regions.”
He made a whistle stop there during his recent visit to troubled Bunkprugu/Yunyoo district where renewed chieftaincy clashes between the Jamong and Jafog (Bimoba clans) resulted in the death of two persons.
He described as needless, the recurring chieftaincy conflicts in the three regions of the north, hence the call for a succession plan.
“The chieftaincy institution is supposed to be a noble institution, the chieftaincy institution is supposed to galvanize the people for development, the chieftaincy institution is supposed to be a blessing but regrettably is becoming a curse because in the process a lot of people are dying needlessly, innocent people are being killed.”
“I think that we need to sit up, look at the institution again and streamline a succession plan and ensure that only qualified people become chiefs and I think that this is the only way we can curb or curtail the instances of chieftaincy disputes,” Mark Woyongo lamented.
Unfortunately, Resources meant for infrastructural development in the conflict zones are usually diverted for local peacekeeping missions.
