Last night on Twitter, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder unveiled the first full-color, head-to-toe photo of the new Batsuit.
Between this photo, the new Batman v. Superman teaser, and yesterday’s Bleacher Report video taken at the Warner Bros. studio, we now have a pretty good idea of Ben Affleck’s get-up.
So how does this Batsuit differ from all other Batsuits?
Here are three major departures from previous Caped Crusader fashion.
1. Batman has gone gray.
The somewhat older, more jaded Batman played by Affleck has a suit that reflects his veteran crime-fighting status. Unlike the smooth outfits of the past, this one has Kevlar-like texturing on the torso and upper arms and hints at battle wounds. The costume also appears to be more gray than jet-black, a seeming callback to Frank Miller’s Batsuit design for the comic The Dark Knight Returns (on which the new film was partly based). But it’s hard to gauge an exact color, since the new Batsuit is accompanied by mood lighting at all times.
2. Size matters.
Batman may not have Superman’s powers, but he makes up for it by being enormous. Affleck is a large man to start with, and the bulked-up design of the Batsuit makes Superman’s sleek tights look scrawny by comparison. And did we mention that rather substantial codpiece Bats is sporting? Maybe those new glowing orbs are just Bruce Wayne’s way of saying, “Eyes up here.”

3. This is ready-for-war couture.
The new Batsuit has the least obvious branding of any previous incarnation: The logo on the chest is extremely subtle, and doesn’t repeat on his utility belt (as it did on Christian Bale’s costume for theDark Knight films). What it lacks in showmanship, the new costume makes up for in killer details: Steel knuckles, steel-toed boots, spiky gloves, and a belt that looks like a piece of military equipment. This Batman is prepared to do battle, whatever the cost.
