The Police have begun investigations into threats from some known persons who have threatened to burn down the South African High Commission and attack its officials.

[contextly_sidebar id=”0mIo0VO8e58JstEpBp4gzF410wFg8H1i”]This comes after the High Commission said; it had received not less than four threats on the lives of its officials including threats from certain individuals to set their office ablaze.

The South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulama Xingwana while addressing a press conference on Monday said “We have received threats in the High Commission.”

She said that four men besieged the High Commission on Friday requesting to see the High Commissioner adding that “they wanted to go into the office but were stopped by the security at the gate…After they were refused entry at the gate the four men threatened that they will be coming back to burn the High Commission offices.”

In the wake of such threats, the Police have already stationed men at the High Commission to forestall any possible retaliatory attacks in response to the xenophobic attacks on African migrants in South Africa.

Speaking to the issue on Citi News, Accra regional Police spokesperson, ASP Afia Tenge called for calm and assured the South African High Commission in Ghana of the polices resolve to protect them.

“The Police have information that some young men have invaded the premises of South African High Commission and as part of security measures there was the need that we deploy men to the area  to avert any form of reprisal attacks,” said ASP Tenge.

She also appealed to persons who had planned to carry out such attacks to desist from it.
