Mobile messaging app WhatsApp has reached over 800 million monthly active users, its CEO Jan Koum announced on Facebook.

That compares to 700 million reported in January 2015 and 600 million last August.

WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in October 2014.

The messaging app in March, started activating voice calls for customers using its Android app.

The free service to call other Whatsapp users requires an internet connection.

The company expects to roll out the feature to iOS users in the coming weeks.
