There is heavy security presence at the South African High Commission in Labone in Accra to protect the facility for fear of reprisal attacks, according to sources close to the High Commission.

The Foreign Affairs Minister Hannah Tetteh has confirmed that a Ghanaian has died in Durban, South Africa where there have been xenophobic attacks, leading to the death of about 6 poeple, while hundreds have sustained injuries.

Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa has also said 4 Ghanaians have been found dead in a shop in Free States, even though there is no direct link to xenophobic attacks.

Following the reports and growing anger and disappointment among many Ghanaians about the development in that country, the Police administration has stationed some of its officers at the South African High Commission to be on standby.

When citifmonline.com visited the High Commission on Sunday, there were some Police vehicles parked at various access routes to the Commission and a fire tender in front of the building.

There were also fully armed security personnel from both the Ghana Police and the Ghana National Fire Service.

Some of the security personnel were seen standing at various positions around the High Commission as well.

Some of the security personnel told citifmonline.com on condition of anonymity that they were assigned to the place to protect lives and property following information of a possible reprisal attack on the diplomatic mission.

They claim the possible attack is because of the xenophobic attacks on African migrants in South Africa.

They also said there has not been any major incident in the area since they were assigned a few days ago.
