The 3 members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who dragged the party chairman Paul Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong to court for contempt have withdrawn the suit.
This was after the leadership of the party agreed to suspend the parliamentary primaries in the 3 constituencies until the constituency elections in those areas are reorganised.
[contextly_sidebar id=”kHEyuZkRlEJLVcNbDu88cstdiZOyGYJI”]The 3 members—Kwame Owusu Ansah, Sarpong Kumankuma and Anthony Gyamfi Ameyaw were asking the high court to hold Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong in contempt over their failure to organize the elections in Juaben, Kumawu and Manyhia North in the Ashanti region.
In an interview with Citi News lawyer for the three NPP members Dr. Poku Adusei said they withdrew the suit because the party leaders have now shown commitment to organize the elections.
The lawyer explained that the law suit was not aimed at “jailing” Afoko and Agyapong but to ensure that “the rule of law is respected.”
He said as soon as the application was tended in, a letter suspending the 3 constituencies from taking part in the primaries was served.
“That was the first step towards pegging them for contempt and basically acknowledging that there is a judgment of the court and therefore they are suspending primaries in the three constitunecies,” he explained.
Dr Adusei said since that “aim has been achieved, the application has been withdrawn” to ensure that the “right thing” is done in the three constituencies.
Per the ruling, the polling station, area coordinators and constituency elections in the three constituencies must be re-run.
