The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hannah Tetteh has confirmed that one Ghanaian, Emmanuel Quarcoo has been killed as a result of the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

“The matter is being investigated by the South African Police and our embassy is following up on this matter. There will be a meeting at the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs with African ambassadors today to discuss the matters. Our Embassy will advise on the need for evacuation of Ghanaian citizens if necessary,” she tweeted.

At least five people have been killed in the last two weeks in attacks in  Durban that targeted shops and homes owned by Somalis, Ethiopians, Malawians and other immigrants.

The attacks were triggered by alleged comments made by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini telling migrants to go home – although he said he was misquoted.

Meanwhile, President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma has condemned the attacks and has called for calm.
