Ghana in collaboration with China based Hanergy Holding Group Limited is set to construct a 400 megawatt solar energy plant in Tamale to help solve the energy crisis.
[contextly_sidebar id=”hmnh522N36ndfzpZW2taXeUquHIsRhzW”]This was revealed by the acting United Nations (UN) Country Director, Girmay Haile at the launch of the Power to Africa social intervention programme.
The project which will provide energy to selected hospitals, schools and communities, is part of the solar energy company’s corporate social responsibility to countries it operates.
Speaking to the media after the launch, Girmay Haille who doubles as the UNAIDS Country coordinator said the UNAIDS is collaborating with the state and Hanergy to promote renewable energy due to the critical role power plays in Ghana’s development.
Ghana is exploring new sources of energy production following the power crisis which has affected the nation for about three years now.
The power crisis has worsened in recent times leading to intensified load shedding exercises which is adversely affecting businesses and local manufacturers.
Government has promised to initiate a project to provide local businesses with solar power to help them stay in business as it works to resolve the power challenges.
Haille however indicated that his outfit is very much interested in promoting the new sources of energy, especially solar energy because “energy has become a very important issue for Ghana and also for future development of the local manufacturing in the country.”
Haille mentioned that the primary drive for the project is to ensure that countries are capable of producing essential drugs which will require the setting up of manufacturing plants which will also require energy and a lot of political, social, and financial support.
“So we are partnering with those that are able to provide these sources of energy, finance and also other support,” he added.
