The Ghana Water Company Limited(GWCL) is said to have cut water supply to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) over unpaid bills.

The development has reportedly affected other public institutions including the Kumasi Central Prisons and Kumasi Polytechnic.

Some students who spoke to Joy News said the situation could have dire consequences on their academic work.

“Students have to go to different hostels to take their bath. People have to go their boyfriend’s place to take their bath. People have to go fetch water downstairs. The time that we use for fetching water can be used for something else. Its really affecting us,”an agitated student complained.

Another frustrated  student said: “For about three days now we have been facing some severe water shortage. You can imagine how difficult it is. Sometimes you have to skip bathing to go to class.”

” I dont get water and it is very very irritating actually. We are in room that uses WC, we need to bath …,”one other student stated.

Sources at the Ghana Water Company Limited(GWCL) have alleged that the school owes them about GHC6 million.

Though Authorities at the school have admitted that they owe the GWCL , they have not confirmed the specific amount.

Speaking to citifmonline.com, the Deputy Relations Registrar of University Relations Officer of  KNUST, B.A Ankamah said :”I dont have the figure on hand but I know that we are owing the Ghana Water Company some money.”

Explaining what influenced the GWCL’s decision, B.A Ankamah explained that Ghana Water Company said they were owing them and so they served the University a letter indicating their intentions of cutting water supply to the school.

He said “the water was flowing as of yesterday but the Ghana Water Company Limited subsequently disconnected them.”
