Ghana has lost out on hosting the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations after the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) settled on Gabon.
Ghana, Algeria and eventual winners Gabon were the three countries left in the bidding process for the tournament.
Ghana can only get another shot at hosting the tournament after 2023 because Cameroon will host it in 2019, Ivory Coast in 2021 and Guinea 2023.
Ghana’s bidding team was led by Ghana Football Association boss Kwesi Nyantakyi and former Black Stars captain Abedi Ayew Pele.
Gabon gets to host the Nations Cup again after sharing it with Equitorial Guinea in 2012.
The former Minister for Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga in August 2014, announced Ghana’s intensions to host the tournament after Libya withdrew as original hosts.
He hoped that the hosting of the tournament would “… Improve the existing sub structures. You also know that CAF will provide some facility to help with the staging of the event whilst corporate sponsors and media rights will also go a long way to help us stage a great tournament if our bid is accepted.”
The last time Ghana hosted the Africa Cup of Nations was in 2008 when the Black Stars won
bronze.
