The chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has denied revealing that the party’s vice presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will lead the party’s 2016 campaign instead of Nana Akufo-Addo.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1Gj1zy1Anx4b01PEerWL7dwq0YZAwCwA”]Mr. Afoko is reported to have revealed the NPP’s strategy ahead of the 2016 election year  – which was to make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a more prominent force in their campaign.

He is also reported as saying, Dr, Bawumia’s recent public lecture on the impact of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout on the nation’s economy and leading a demonstration in the Upper East Region are all part of the party’s grand strategy.

However, in a rejoinder released on Tuesday, Mr. Afoko said the publication is a “complete misrepresentation of my very comment in the interview.”

According to him, as the chairman of the largest opposition party in Ghana seeking to be re-elected to govern the nation, “it would be premature so to speak, for me to reveal our party campaign strategy at whim.”

He clarified that he in no way said Bawumia will play a leading role but rather said: “increasingly, the public will see an active participation by party stalwarts such as our presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, former President Kufuor, myself the National Chairman, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Alan Kyerematen, Asamoah Boateng, Dr. Konadu Apraku, Francis Addai Nimoh, Joe Ghartey, amongst others in the campaign.”

“United in decision, the NPP stalwarts and members intend to support our Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo in the campaign to achieve a one-touch victory in 2016,” he added.

Mr. Afoko has therefore entreated the general public, especially members of the NPP to disregard the said publication.
