Staff of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union, TEWU and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana, FUSAG of the College of Health Sciences picketed on Tuesday at the school to register their anger at management.
According them, the school has threatened to freeze their salaries if they do not discontinue their indefinite strike.
Members of the TEWU and FUSAG of the College, embarked on an indefinite strike over their management’s failure to pay their interim market premium owed them since 2014.
According to them, the premium, which is an allowance for staff calculated according to basic salary, has not been paid despite a series of meetings with the management and directive from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
They accused the management of the school of paying only the staff of the Dental Clinic and ignoring them.
They described the situation as “unfair.”
On Tuesday they reported that they received letters from their management threatening them to discontinue their indefinite strike or risk loosing their salaries.
They added that during negotiations they found out that there had been attempts by management to freeze salaries of some members.
Prince Badasu, TEWU Secretary of the school said the authorities are discriminating against them.
Speaking to Citi News he lamented, “we are just fighting because of the interim market premium. It is something that we are entitled to. But management is trying to tell us that we do not deserve this benefit.”
“Authorities of the college told us that we are supporting staff and that we are educational worker. They used their own discretion and paid some who they say are beneficiaries,” he added.
Meanwhile Management of the school has appealed to the Staff of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union, TEWU and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana, FUSAG of the College of Health Sciences to exercise restraint.
According to them a committee has been set up to address their grievances.
The Assistant Registrar in Charge of Public Affairs of the college, Augustine Amissare in an interview with Citi News appealed to striking members of TEWU and FUSAG to return to work while the committee works to address their concern.
“… A committee in place working hard to address their concerns. I will plead with them to return to work while we address the issues,” he assured.
