The Minister for Environment Science Technology & Innovation, Mahama Ayariga has stated that Ghana will continue to record high deficits unless the nation’s scientific community is mobilized to help with the creation of innovative products and services.
This, he said will help in reducing the importation of goods as well as halt the depreciation of the cedi.
Mr. Ayariga made these remarks when he opened the Annual Technology Fair at the Ghana Telecommunication University at Tesano in Accra.
He indicated that the President’s call for the patronage of made in Ghana goods has “imposed a huge burden on the scientific community to collaborate with the private sector and government to develop local substitutes for imported goods and services.”
The Minister assured the public that the his Ministry will soon present a programme for the approval of President to ensure the diffusion of locally developed technologies and inventions into the production of local goods.
This, he said “can replace many imported products and reduce the demand for foreign exchange for imports only if it is appreciated by the Ghanaian public as well packaged and marketed.”
