The Table-Bay Jazz Bar at the Alisa Hotel in Accra has been the place to be since last Monday night as Citi FM celebrated three highlife legends as part of the MOGO festival.

Dubbed, Nights with Highlife Greats, the event is expected to give the three- Nana Kwame Ampadu, Ben Brako and Paapa Yankson the chance to perform some of their hit songs as well as tell their stories on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights respectively.

On Monday night, even before Nana Ampadu took the microphone, his African Brothers International Band entertained guests with tunes from their rich repertoire much to the delight of all present.

“I feel elated, this is a night I will never forget in my life until the Almighty calls me to eternity, thanks be to God and to Citi FM for the foresight,’’ were his first words when Nana Ampadu took his seat in the cozy Jazz Bar.

He talked about how he loved to sing as a child and was always called to give the tune in school. The Obo-Kwahu native said he was enrolled in the church choir where he impressed everyone inspite of his petit stature.

Nana Ampadu mentioned his late father as his main opposition to his musical career since the latter was under the impression that musicians were usually womanisers, smokers and people who led a carefree life.

Some the songs he performed on the night were Ankonam Boafo, Agartha, Getty, Oman Boadwo among others.  He interacted with his audience and ensured that they sang along with him. It was indeed a night to remember

Just like Nana, Ben Brako also told his story with intermittent performances which went down very well with the audience on Tuesday night.

He did songs from his hit album Baya to the delight of the audience. Patrons enjoyed him as he did Etue, Moko Me Krom, Mawie among others.

Yesterday was the turn of Paapa Yankson and he surely thrilled patrons with his collection of songs and interesting life story.

The week-long MOGO Festival continues with an African Jazz Jamboree (Jazz in the Citi) at the National Theatre tomorrow and the  MOGO Awards comes off on Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre to round off the celebration of music of Ghanaian origin.

The MOGO Nights with Highlife Greats is sponsored by Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and Alisa Hotels and powered by Citi 97.3FM.
