Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas in his latest exposé revealed how inmates at the orphanage in Bawjiase were maltreated.

In some instances, the children were forced to fast for days even when there is abundance of food.

But months after the closure of the home, about 12 of the inmates have been returned to facilitate their academic work ahead of the BECE examinations.

The reported return of the 12 raised some concerns with Anass Aremeyaw indicating his disappointment at the decision in interview with Citi News.

However Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection Nana Oye Lithur said “it won’t happen, not under my watch”

The Minister further explained that she has had series of meetings with stakeholders in this particular issue. “I’m going to have a meeting with the CID and the Department of Social Welfare on this, there have been some meetings” she said.

The meetings according to the Minister are to keep all stakeholders involved in the case updated with the most recent information available.

The Minister assured that the ministry would ensure that the children are taken from the home immediately they are done with their BECE exams.

“The explanation that was given to me was that they were going to write their BECE. So as soon as they finish their BECE they coming back into care. I can assure you of that” she assured.
