Women’s Right Organization WILDAF have thrown their weight behind the NPP’s decision to allow only women to contest incumbent women Members of Parliament (MPs) in the party’s Parliamentary primaries.

[contextly_sidebar id=”YvSUCuzDnab7vP8vPAa4fCJn7c5VHG2H”]According to the leadership of the NPP, the directive is to ensure that their 16 female parliamentarians are maintained in Parliament.

Though the decision has generated some controversy, the Programmes Director at WILDAF, Frank Bodza told Citi News prior to the NPP’s meeting they  had made a similar  proposal to the party in a letter.

He said “earlier on (prior to the meeting) we submitted a letter to the NPP and proposed to the party to allow their women MPs contest unopposed or have only women contesting those seats”.

He argued that all other political parties had made various promises on the affirmative action in the past election in which they didn’t adhere to.

“So this move is in good taste. In previous elections, all the parties gave promises about their desire to protect women in politics so if this is the time they have decided to redeem their promises, we all need to support them,” he stated.

He further expressed hope that this move by the NPP will be replicated by all political parties in the country.
