The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked Ghanaians to hold President Nana Akufo-Addo responsible for any mayhem which may arise as a result of the attacks on their members.

According to the party, the current President has failed to stop members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have allegedly been attacking their members without any provocation.

“When you are the Commander in Chief and you allow gangsters to be humiliating state security officers, where are we going to?” Mr. Asiedu Nketia questioned.

“… I am not surprised at all because throughout the campaign I kept warning that we all know the best gauge of anybody’s conduct in future is his conduct in the past and we know the conduct of the various presidential candidates, including Nana Addo, and his record of encouraging conduct.”

The NDC General Secretary stressed that ensuring order and peace is a collaborative effort but he added that “the key person who should lead the peacekeeping game is the person who has power.”

Mr. Asiedu Nketia also noted that the NDC members had a right to defend themselves and warned that the leadership of the party could not restrain its members forever.

“We are operating a democracy and it is the fundamental right of every Ghanaian to defend himself and I am sure the NPP and Nana Addo know this… We will keep on holding our people in check. We will still, at the national level, try to still ask people to endure the pain but we are telling you is that there will be a point where the followers will defy the leadership if the problem is not solved.”

The leadership of the NPP has however already condemned reported attacks on members of the NDC perpetrated by some of its supporters.

This followed a directive from former President John Mahama to the security agencies to arrest supporters of the NPP who vandalize government properties or attack supporters of the NDC.
