The Local Government Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda, has asked contractors undertaking the ongoing market redevelopment projects in the Kumasi Metropolis, to partner the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to build additional stores.

The additional stores will be built under a Public Private Partnership agreement. The agreement, according to Alhaji Collins Dauda, is to ensure “that every trader registered will have a stall.”

This decision was reached when the Local Government Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda visited the Kumasi metropolis to monitor the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Project (GUMPP) Priority Investment Projects.

He observed that ” the number of lockable shops that we have been able to construct, is far lass than the number of registered traders at the time that we started the construction. The difference between what is constructed and what is supposed to be provided is huge”.

Alhaji Dauda added that, “we spoke with the contractors who have agreed to partner KMA… and they have given indication that if they are asked to start next month, they can use maximum six months to add on the number of stores required to meet the registered number”.

The Atonsu Market currently has about 60 completed lockable stores, though the market earlier had about 700 lockable stores. The Asawasi market however has an excess of about 10 lockable stores, with 120 lockable stores completed in the Tafo market redevelopment project.

The Minister took time to visit the Oti Land fill site where two additional cells are being developed to take waste generated in the metropolis. The site is expected to last for 10 years.
