A former Member of Parliament under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Kan Daapah has expressed concern about the absence of checks and balances in Ghana’s democracy.
Mr. Dapaah believes the existence of democracy in a country such as Ghana, without the necessary checks and balances is worse than military dictatorship.
“Democracy is good, we should very happy that we have parliamentary democracy but parliamentary democracy without checks and balances is worse than military dictatorship and that is what we have today ,” Kan Daapah said.
He further expressed concerns about what he calls excessive power vested in the Executive, saying the “executive now overshadows the legislature and the judiciary in this country.
Kan Dapaah who is currently the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said the Subsidiary committees have been unable to correct the ills of excessive executive power because the committee has more members from government than the Minority.
“PAC for instance, the Chairman who is from the minority side has no voting right. Even if he wants to vote, he will not be able to cast a vote.”
