Residents of the Upper East Region who were hit by floods due to torrential rains last Wednesday, have received relief items from the National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO).
The downpour displaced scores of residents, washed away bridges and destroyed farmlands and foodstuffs in three districts of the region.
The most affected districts were Builsa North and the Bolgatanga municipality. Parts of Bongo district was also affected.
Upper East Regional Deputy Chief Disaster Officer of NADMO in-charge of Disasters and Operation, Paul Wooma told Citi News in Sandema that, the relief items are being given to 1,364 persons, who were affected by the floods.
He said this is being done with support from the Regional Coordinating Council and Member of Parliament for the Builsa North constituency, James Agalga.
“Following the torrential rains, a total of 1,364 persons comprising 901 in Sandema and 463 in Bolgatanga were affected, and relief items such as mattresses, maize, mosquito nets, blankets, rubber plates and buckets are being distributed to victims in the two districts respectively” Mr. Wooma stated.
Some of the victims who received the relief items were grateful for the gesture but stressed that, the authorities must resolve the factors that cause floods in the area.
Mr. Wooma said though NADMO was not shocked at the floods and its impact on residents, it has always advised residents living in low land areas to relcoate upwards during the rainy season, to avert any potential threats to their lives
Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Albert Abongo, attributed the floods partly to shoddy works done on the culverts and bridges in the Sandema area, adding that, most roads and dams have not been maintained for a longtime accounting for the situation.
He assured residents of immediate remedial works to fix the damaged infrastructure, and advised residents in low land areas to be cautious during the season.
The distribution of the relief items was led by Upper East Regional Minister, Albert Abongo, Deputy Interior Minister James Agalga, DCE for Builsa North Bonaventure Adegabey, officials of NADMO, the Ghana Highways Authority and Ghana police service.
